How will my child feel about me? Will they hate me? Will they be mad at me? Will they think I did not love them? One birth mother said, “ I am mad at my father for leaving me. Will my child be mad at me?” Her father left her and did not make a plan for her. He just left her and did not have contact with her again. He did not get updates on how she was doing in school. He did not get updates on what sports she played or if she was in dance. He did not ask for pictures of her. That is different, that is abandonment. That is not making an adoption plan out of love.
Adopted children are taught at an early age that they have two sets of parents who love them deeply. Adoption is not a secret anymore. It is healthier for a child to know that they have two sets of parents who love them; the adoptive family who is raising them and the birth family that made an adoption plan so that the child could have a fulfilling life.
Think about writing your child a letter or picking out a special gift or keepsake that you can send along with your baby. Something that expresses your love and hopes that you have for your child.
Did you know that Faith Hill, five Grammy Award winning artist, was adopted? Look what she had to say about her birth mother:
“I have a lot of respect for my birth mother … I know she must have a lot of love for me to want to give me what she felt was a better chance.”
