Who would you like to visit you and support you while you are in the hospital? Who is it that you definitely know you do not want to visit you in the hospital? Who would you like in the delivery room with you? I had one birth mother tell me she had to have her mother in the delivery room as her mother was the only one who knew how to help her remain calm.
Sometimes a birth mother will invite the adoptive parents in the delivery room. What an honor to share that moment together when your child is born and both the birth parent(s) and the adoptive parent(s) are there. What a gift that is to your child as they are growing up and the adoptive parents can say, I was there the day you were born and we cried with your birth mother and we laughed with your birth mother. Your birth mother loved you so much and this was one of the hardest decisions she had ever been faced with, but she choose what she thought at the time was best for you. Now that is love, putting someone else’s needs before your own.
Being surrounded by supportive and helpful people is important during this time. Someone who will cry with you; laugh with you; hold you when you feel sad; and understand when you feel angry or guilty. Don’t be afraid to voice your needs and your desires for this important time.
During your hospital time, be sure to reach out to your adoption caseworker to answer any questions, to provide you with support and assist you through the process.
